This is warning for any non-ruby techs, who cannot fix installation themselves:
Tried installation script:
latest ubuntu. Did not work because of upstart/systemd changes
ubuntu 12.04 from VirtualBoxes.org. Bad Gateway from nginx (connection refused on 8040 port)
ubuntu 12.04 on AWS from images because it was confirmed in discussions that it works on this image. Bad Gateway from nginx (connection refused on 8040 port)
some dockerized version. same Bad gateway error.

All those connection refused on port 8040 errors indicate the main barkeep web server is not running.
Couple things to look at:
Have you added you google oauth credentials to the config folder?
Have you looked in /var/log/barkeep for error log to see what the error is?
I have had the same issue installing on a clean Ubuntu 14.04 by using the installation script. I was unable able to connect to Localhost:8040, unlike @marmotadev I didnt get a bad gateway error. If i tried to start barkeep with sudo start barkeep it said it was already running.
