I think something like this should be our final plot in the paper:

@dhruvbalwada and I think that we can decompose the small scale contribution into three components:

  • Ocean contribution $Q^{\dagger\dagger}_O$ - The small scale signal due to small scale ocean features (and a large scale atmosphere)
  • Atmosphere contribution $Q^{\dagger\dagger}_A$ - The small scale signal due to small scale atmospheric features (and a large scale ocean)
  • Coupled contribution $Q^{\dagger\dagger}_{OA}=Q^{\dagger\dagger}-Q^{\dagger\dagger}_O-Q^{\dagger\dagger}_A$ - The residual which can only be explained by coupled effects of small scale ocean and atmosphere.

I switched from ** to $\dagger\dagger$ just for github markdown 🙄

Note the colorbar is scaled to 1/4 for the coupled effects. These are very small compared to the other terms, yet they seem to be the effect most studies have focussed on!

This figure is beautiful @jbusecke! 👏

Only one minor comment upon first glance: "Heat flux" is two words 😉
