Not clear whether sorting command modifies the list

It is not stated in the user guide whether the sorting command modifies the list or just sorts the list and creates an output of it.

Sort command will not modify the list. There is a simple way to check it. You can list out the list (i.e. entry list) again after a sort command. You can see that the order is still input order. However, we should have state it clear in our UG.
