A member should be able to mark something to easily find it again later.

His list should be visible to other members and visitors

Following other users would accomplish this. Maybe add a 'follow' button to the user's profile?

follow a user is indeed the implicit idea behind, like bookmark or like this article that we see on some social network, bookmark this place on MapsWithMe.
It would be great to think of a comprehensive one way for the user to perform that action.
Either we just do what social networks do, or we try to think beyond.
