I recently found that I got an error when trying to update Shumway:

shumway_update_download_error

When I asked on the Mozilla forums about it I was told:

shumway_mozilla_support_reply

shumway_mozilla_support_reply2

So what is happening with Shumway? I tried contacting the Google group but there was no reply... Should I remove Shumway from my browser or is there still support and development going on for it? If support has ended this should be indicated on this GitHub page and elsewhere. If support has not ended, then why is the update not working?

It's a shame, I want to experience some flash based things, but can't thanks to the fact that people won't accept to change to html5, and now I hear that the alternative, shumway, is broken and won't be supported.

And I don't want to use flash, it's bloated and has a security flaw every 3 seconds

I have the same question for this project in general.

However, speaking of Flash all developers will be forced to migrate to web standards, since all major browser decided to drop support for plugins. This might also be the reason for a drop of interest in this project, since Flash is definitely facing its last days.

Also Adobe Flash Professional's newest version is now called Adobe Animate, and exports to html5 and webgl as well.

edit: Although I don't know how good it is at exporting.

It's a terrible shame if this project is dead- lots of historical internet content will become forever inaccessible once all the major browsers drop Flash support.

That's why we should have some kind of thing like Shumway, but I can't use it because firefox won't let me install it, even though it's supposedly an official Mozilla extension.

The way I install Shumway is, first, you need to go to about:config and create/change some boolean values to make life easier for installing extensions:

extensions.checkCompatibility to false.
xpinstall.signatures.required to false.
extensions.blocklist.enabled to false.

The blocklist doesn't need to be disabled, unless there's a false positive. So best to leave it enabled. However, it does report some extension installations activity to Mozilla, so keep that in mind.

So far, these settings still work with Firefox 46 as of this date, and will probably always work with Nightly, since its a developer-grade browser.

Next, I just go to http://mozilla.github.io/shumway/ and below the line that says "Try it out!" I click on install the latest Shumway. It tells me it's unverified, but you can install it anyway.

So far, seems like the project has had some commits here and there. I won't believe it's dead yet until the Mozilla lady stops singing, as they say. :)

@mrrhq Unfortunately, the project is dead. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/describecomponents.cgi?product=Firefox%20Graveyard

That will be terrible for all legacy Flash content that will never be converted to html5; additionally, Google has discontinued his "Swiffy" service.

Even Mozilla descide to not anymore support this tool. Why do the not allow to sign this addon anyway? Who knows which member could maybe found to add some enhancement and bug-fixing.

I guess anyone could fork the project and get it signed..

Anybody knows why the project was dropped or what can be done to make it alive back?

Really, i believe it can make the internet much better and secure. Don't try to tell me, that nobody uses bloated flashplayer. It is still very popular, unfortunately :(

Maybe someone should start a Kickstarter or something to get funding for Mozilla to assign some devs to this project?
