As has become apparent on the mailing list, some users have images that contain object that don't necessarily scale well according to the diagonal of the bounding box. For example, a spine is very thin, but has a large bounding box and so the normalisation is not effective.
Therefore, we should allow the user to pass a method that controls how this normalisation is performed.
