Biography

<p>
During his Bachelor's degree, he interned for two years at the <a href=https://nics.utk.edu/>
National Institute for Computational Sciences</a> and participated in the Student Cluster Competition during
SC'13 and SC'14. Next, he worked as a system administrator for <a href=https://listserv.utk.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=NEWTON_HPC>Newton</a>,
which was a cluster of computers at the University of Tennessee. He wrote
<a href=https://github.com/benbenolson/newton-install>BASH and Perl scripts</a> which
compiled, installed, and set up environment modules for a lot of the software available on that system.
</p>
<p>
During graduate school he worked under the advisement of <a href=http://web.eecs.utk.edu/~mrjantz/>Dr. Michael Jantz</a>.
Initially, the work required significantly patching the Linux kernel and the Hotspot JVM to support memory coloring, which our
lab used to investigate potential power-saving techniques on homogeneous (DRAM-only) memory systems.
</p>
<p>
He then began primarily researching memory management in heterogeneous memory systems. His research career began with several
Oak Ridge National Laboratory internships advised by <a href=https://web.ornl.gov/~trjones/>Terry Jones</a>, who supported
him with the <a href=https://www.exascaleproject.org/research-project/sicm/>SICM project</a>. This work largely
focused on automating memory management such that workloads could benefit from high-capacity
non-volatile memories while maintaining performance.
</p>
<p>
Near the end of his PhD program he interned for Intel, working with Kshitij Doshi as his mentor. Once graduated,
he accepted an offer to start full-time and moved his family to sunny Phoenix, where he now resides.
