Currency payments are made on an up-front basis. This allows an attack on the network whereby a node can offer itself as a source, take payment from potential listeners, and then not provide them with service. Additionally, the use of direct payments will result in heavy load on the bank server. An escrow/account system is under development which will remove both these issues.
