Fix auth

Switch around some of the ways we were using the auth of the tap service which recently broken when Pat tightened the constraints in the code in a November PR.

Turn up debug logging

Turn up debug logging to hopefully find some more information on our IncompleteRead connection reset where the TAP service seems to be resetting the connection early.
