Possible to require search or filter selected before showing directory entires

Currently directories will show everything and then apply filters.
Would it be possible to create a directory where a search or filter is required?
Views does support input required for the filters, but don't think this applies to the facets.
Would the above behaviour be author selectable or would it be something that has to be set globally?

information can be displayed on a map without the need for a total list as well. The user would be required to search and/or filter content out from map points that would be displayed on load.
