In case someone finds it useful:

definition from the Classic Word List (pre-pu)

(noun) difference
(modifier) different
(conjunction) otherwise, or else
(transitive verb) change, alter, modify

(the conjuction usage is of course archaic, taken over by "ante la")

The pu-based stuff seems to be mostly adjectives, let's include some nouns and verbs

change, difference, modification; other, altered; to modify

I think we probably need the adjective translations first, because I feel like "ante" is most commonly used adjective-like, as a modifier or as an intransitive predicate.

I also think we should put "difference" first in the noun section, because I feel like "ante" as a noun is better described as "difference" than as "change, modification". "Difference" can be both "the difference between two unrelated things" and "the difference between how something is and how it was". The translation "change" leans too heavily towards the latter, and "modification" heavily implies an actor applying change, which is definitely not necessary for something to be "ante".

So maybe:

different, other; difference, change, modification; to modify, to make different

I'd maybe even remove "modification".

it feels weird to list words multiple times. if we have representation from several parts of speech in the examples anyway, i don't think it adds anything to transform individual example words
