`Current-MSRV-compatible.lock` would basically mean that we don't determine the freshest dependency tree that works with MSRV, only promising that `Minimum.lock` works and anything beyond that is direct-minimal-versions` will just error out. +That is an unfortunate limitation because `package_a` could easily be fully functional with just `foo = "0.1.1"`, but at least it removes one surprising case of `Cargo.lock` having `foo = "0.1.2"`, as would happen with `-Z minimal-versions`. +However the issue remains with dev dependencies and optional features. + +To summarize, Cargo has been things with an old toolchain, due to its ability to generate a working `Cargo.lock`. +Contrast that with the current situation where any old toolchain user would have to manually craft such a lock
