Text with media on sections

Thank you so much for providing and maintaining this great template. Is there a way to add text to a section page along with the images of the work presented? I am trying to display test at the top of a section page, just like the about and contact pages followed by the images of the work presented. I followed the example in the example site included and created _index.md file (via hugo new command) with the text I wanted to display in the section folder (named sketches) along with sketch1.md, sketch2.md, etc. to achieve this goal. However, the sketches page only displays the images but not the content of _index.md file at all. I would appreciate any guidance.
