Screen displays, but unable to control device

Device rooted (yes/no) :  Yes
Device OS version (1.5/1.6/2.0,...) :  4.4.3 (HTC Sense 6.0/ViperOne M8 2.4.0

Computer OS and version (Mac,Win,Linux,...) :  Win 8.1 64 bit
Java version (java -version from command line) :  1.8.0_20-b26
ADB version (adb version from command line) :  1.0.31
AndroidScreencast version :  Not sure how to find out...

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.  Plug device in to PC
2.  Run androidscreencast.jnlp
3.  Software displays device screen, but mouse & keyboard do not work/have no 
effect

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expect to be able to have some interaction with screen
