The JupyterLab Real-time Collaboration feature (RTC) is being developed by another team. At some point (once RTC gets a little further along), we need to work on storing the commenting data inside the datastore which RTC uses (which is currently in-flux AFAWK, thus we're not ready to tackle this).
This is important for long-term interoperability of features in JupyterLab, and it is mentioned in the press release explicitly.
