Can this plugin work with the pandoc_reader plugin?

I am using pandoc-flavoured markdown and am trying to update the somewhat ancient pandoc_reader to handle the arguments and extensions of pandoc 2.9.2.1 which I am running.

For some reason, the pandoc_reader plugin does not recognize the YAML metadata block at the top of the file and complains that the title is empty when it is not.

Hence my question.

A serviceable workaround is most appreciated.
