Did you have a look at the optimized file format that Google Chrome uses for its Hunspell dictionaires? http://src.chromium.org/svn/trunk/src/chrome/tools/convert_dict/
I'm currently investigating that option in order to see if that gives better performance.

BTW Another way of improving performance may be to pass the maximum number of suggestions (parameter of Java service) to the the Hunspell code. This could avoid generation of numerous unnecessary suggestion but won't solve a problem of slow suggestion generation for long words (e.g. product names).
