The design below is the one i currently use for my projects:
Components description
R1, R4, R7, R10: Pull down resistors for driver enable pin. These rsistors put to GND the DE pin of the RS485 transceivers, making them behave in read mode as default.
R2, R3, R5, R6, R8, R9, R11, R12: Pull down/up resistors for maintain differential levels on the RS485 bus (as far i understood)
RT1, RT2: Line termination resistors.
4-wire cable: A bus cable made of (at least) 4 wires. Depending on availability i use a CAT5 cable or a 2+2 cable (used by professional alarm systems)
