If you've never worked with Mercurial before, please skim the following chapters of Mercurial: The Definitive Guide. It's a very well-written guide, so 10 minutes of skimming now might save you hours of problem solving later.

Chapter 2. A tour of Mercurial: the basics

Get a copy of the software

A Drupal installation profile is a collection of code that describes a
Drupal platform -- image resizing here, video support there, etc. Our
software is composed of two Drupal installation profiles:

Input, the platform for writing stories, reporting news by email, voting, etc.
Managing News, specifically a customized version of Managing News that uses RIT maps, etc.

Use the Mercurial commands below to make make copies of this
software. If you are using TortoiseHg or some other GUI tool, extract
the relevant information from these commands (username, server,
repository location, etc.) and plug it into the GUI. Please note that
you must have an account on opl-management.rit.edu for any of these to
work.

Input:
hg clone ssh://[username]@opl-management.rit.edu//var/repos/rise/input-dev input

Managing News (+ Our Customizations):
hg clone ssh://[username]@opl-management.rit.edu//var/repos/rise/mnrise-dev mnrise

Installing the profiles

Each of the above commands creates a directory, and each directory
contains an installation profile. The first command creates a directory
named "input-dev" containing the Input installation profile. The second
command creates a directory named "mnrise-dev" containing the Managing
News (+ our customizations) installation profile. Follow the steps below
to install an actual Drupal website from these installation profiles.

For each profile, determine the version of Drupal core required. To
do this, navigate to the installation profile directory (input or
mnrise) and run the following:

For input:
grep "core" drupal-org.make

For mnrise:
grep "projects\[drupal\]\[version\]" *

Download this version of Drupal core.

Move the installation profile directory (input-dev or mnrise-dev) to the
profiles

directory of the Drupal core file structure. For input, rename
input-dev to rise. For Managing News, rename mnrise-dev to mnrise.

If you are using the myNews development server and do not already have Drush Make set up, add the following to your
~/.bashrc
file...

alias drush="drush --include=/usr/local/lib/drush-commands"

...and run
source ~/.bashrc

If installing Input, navigate to the
input
directory and run
the following
. Answer "y" to questions about making a site in the current directory.

rm -rf modules/modules; drush make --drupal-org -y drupal-org.make

Install Drupal as you would normally, ensuring that you select the
appropriate installation profile. If you do not already have a database
to use for the "Configure Database" step, please ask me or Seppi to set
one up for you.

For the record, this will become easier down the line. When an
installation profile is shared on drupal.org, most of this is done
automatically.

Contributing Changes

Make changes to the software and commit it (with
hg commit
)
as you would with Subversion. When you are totally satisfied with your
changes and are sure that they do not cause any problems, use
hg push
to share those changes with the rest of the group. I will do the dirty work of moving your changes into official releases.

Please only push changes related to your tickets. If you do something
totally different ("I changed the theme to one I like better and
started using a different voting module"), please do not push these
changes the standard way, as this will affect all other developers.
Instead, please talk with me so that we can share your changes in a way
that does not affect the main stream of development.

Comparing our modifications to the base Managing News software

To see what changes we made to Managing News, do one or more of the following:

Read the commit messages

This is probably the easiest way to get an overview of what we've changed. Type
hg log
and read each commit message.

View code changes

If you need to see what actual code has changed, type the following:
hg diff -r tip -r 0 | less
