It has been deprecated in favor of a controller-runtime feature called WithAuthenticationAndAuthorization. More details at kubernetes-sigs/kubebuilder#3907.

We will need to

Use WithAuthenticationAndAuthorization for metrics endpoint
Add RBAC rules as described in WithAuthenticationAndAuthorization docs
Remove usage of kube-rbac-proxy
