title: Smart monitor for Grandma or Grandad in their home

excerpt: The KemuriSense smart power socket allows nonintrusive monitoring of a loved one, and can notify families and carers when there is an unexpected change in behaviour, but without pendants or other worn monitoring devices

Who Needs Wellbeing Monitors?

All families with an older generation can benefit from Kemuri. Vulnerable people living alone may have falls or illnesses that may remain undetected for days and they can suffer from life-threatening dehydration, urinary tract infections or hypothermia. They may not be able to reach the kitchen for drinking and eating as normal and be unable to call for help.

Kemuri K-Sockets check patterns of normal activity every hour and automatically send alerts if they detect risks. Families get peace of mind for less than the price of a cup of coffee a day.

Most people want to live independently as long as possible. Kemuri benefits those who:

Don’t realise the increasing risks of falls, stroke or diabetic coma

Forget normal activities of daily living

Don’t wear their pendant alarms or fall monitors, and can’t call for help

Resent daily contact by care visits or phone calls they consider unwelcome or intrusive

Have widely dispersed families who can’t make daily visits to check on wellbeing

Families can now respond to Kemuri alerts and take action to resolve any problems.

Why hourly monitoring?

Older people tend to have regular patterns of activity during the day. Use of kettles and cooking appliances can be predicted by Kemuri’s machine learning system. It checks every hour for changes from normal patterns. Alerts may be sent as soon as the number of changes in a day is significantly higher than normal. Nobody should be left unattended for more than a few hours.

Alerts may be sent by email or text message to any person who can log on to the Kemuri WebApp. Users can also see a summary of the previous eight days. A green day is normal, an amber day shows moderate level of change, a red day shows major changes to normal patterns and an alert may have been sent.

Colour

Hour

Day

Green

No changes

Few changes

Amber

One change

Moderate changes

Red

Two or more changes

Many changes

For example, if Grandpa normally makes his breakfast at 7am every day and one morning he doesn’t make it. Kemuri just flags the missed use of his kettle and lack of movement in the kitchen - not an alert. Maybe he just wanted to lie in after watching a film the night before, and there’s no problem. But if he also misses his morning coffee and lunch, then any selected people will be alerted.

Timely family action could save a life, avert a long hospital stay and help to retain independent living.

Who can be alerted?

The older person must give informed consent for users to view the WebApp and receive alerts. Authorised users can choose to receive email alerts, SMS text alerts or no alerts. Families can share the responsibility for responding to alerts and change who receives them at any time.

Pattern recognition is fully automatic by machine learning and there are no complicated rules to set up.

What are Kemuri benefits?

For older people, Kemuri K-Sockets carry no stigma. They look like ordinary, familiar, power sockets. Just plug in kettles, microwaves, toasters or any other cooking equipment with no change to normal activity. With hourly monitoring, people live safer in their own homes for longer.

For families, you can reduce the trauma of loved ones not being able to call for help. You can improve their health outcomes with faster medical treatment and enable them to continue living independently.

Is Kemuri simple to install?

Yes. There’s a choice of portable or fixed K-Sockets. Portable K-Sockets simply plug into a power socket close to a kitchen worktop. Fixed K-Sockets need a competent person to replace an existing double power socket. After installation, plug a kettle and any cooking appliance into the K-Socket.

Everything else is automatic. K-Sockets immediately start sending data to the Internet from internal sensors for motion, electrical power, room temperature and humidity. Built-in SIM cards means they work without broadband and internal batteries provide 18 hours back-up if there is a power cut.

Portable - for immediate use

Portable K-Sockets, also known as Reablement Monitors, are ideal for installation immediately after discharge from hospital, a fall or other medical conditions that increase the risk of living alone.

However, some users switch off at the wall socket, which triggers unnecessary alerts that cause concern. In such cases it is preferable to replace them with alternative fixed K-Sockets.

Fixed - for tamperproof installation
