x553 support for 1000BASE-T SFP Modules

Hi - the docs have this note regarding 1000BASE-T SFP Modules support for the x553:

	Intel(R) Ethernet Connection X553 do not support the following features:
	* Speed and duplex auto-negotiation.
	* Wake on LAN
	* 1000BASE-T SFP Modules

Is this a hardware limitation or something that can be added to the software? The x553 is quite popular for soho/sme router appliances, and the lack of SFP support is cumbersome.
