The HOT Data Quality Group had a number of related ideas for some kind of thing that new mappers must do before they start mapping, such a quiz, a walkthrough, a tutorial or a sandbox. Right now aside from a video or any training new mappers get through a mapathon, there isn't anything in OSM itself, aside from the iD walkthrough which doesn't always apply to TM projects. It would be good to have some kind of additional required training for new mappers so they can start mapping well from the start. Some of the ideas we had were:

  • Self directed tutorial on imagery interpretation and making map edits
  • Sandbox for practicing by new mappers
  • Somehow something that makes understanding and emphasizing the imagery required to complete the task taking into account offsets and different services Bing, Maxar, etc. This still seems to be a big issue related to data quality and we should try to make it as “user proof” as possible.
  • Easy multiple choice quiz new beginners have to “pass” on aerial imagery interpretation (shadows, roads, etc)
  • Tutorial video about mapping and imagery that new mappers must watch

Describe the solution you'd like
Some combination of the above. The last tow might be the easiest to implement, with a quiz such as "does this building look correct?" (yes/no) with a few good options, or a video about identifying buildings, but more effective might be something where mappers are required to map some buildings and square the corners and the walkthrough checks to see how accurate they are.

Describe alternatives you've considered
See above

Hi all, the Quality Control Working Group would like to prioritize this one

For example, something like this. A few pictures with why they are correct or wrong, and then afterwards pictures of what the building should look like.

Does this building look correct?
No, it is mapped too large. Make sure to trace the building perimeter as accurately as possible.

too_large

Does this building look correct?
No, the corners are not squared. Click Q on your keyboard to address that.

not_square

Does this building look correct?
No, multiple separate buildings are mapped as one large building. Make sure to map them as individual buildings.

multiple_asone

Does this building look correct?
Yes, the size is accurate and it probably extends under the tree.
