River gets increasingly like tradfi: https://www.nobsbitcoin.com/river-introduces-btc-yield-on-usd-deposits/ They are effectively offering to pay their users to short bitcoin. To use this product you must create and maintain a USD position and not allocate that money to bitcoin. The 3.8% yield is thus a reward for not buying bitcoin. And if bitcoin rises by more than 3.8% relative to the dollar, you'll still only get 3.8% on your USD position, thus losing out. Therefore by agreeing to these terms you're effectively hoping bitcoin underperforms 3.8% APR -- in fact you are betting bitcoin will underperform the yield-accruing USD position and you are putting money on that bet -- i.e. you are shorting bitcoin. |
