--coverage option formatting

I am trying to run Phylosift on contigs, and want to use --coverage option to specify the contig abundance/depth values to the program. I was unable to find any documentation on the format of the --coverage file, so I tried using the most intuitive format: a tabl delimited file with the contig name in the col1 and the average read abundance of that contig in col2. Phylosift does not return any errors, however the output I get is identical to the output without using the --coverage option, so i dont think its is working. Also, Phylosift made a bunch of .cov files in the mian directory, but they are all empty! What am I doing wrong?
