That's the conclusion that I've also come to. I de-encapsulated a fx-83GTPlus last year and did some analysis of the pinouts. Just based on the relative areas of ROM and RAM, one can tell that it's not simple mask ROM.

I have some more recent models to look at (charity shop finds in poor condition), but I'm working on improving my microscopy setup for taking high-res die photographs.

You should join the discord again, a programmer based on the PI Pico has been developed and some calculators have been flashed already.
