Slow when many threads are in setup in the settings

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open the screen saver settings
2. Set the screen saver to the max number of threads
3. show it in preview

What is the expected output? 

It is expected to look the same way as it does with the minimum number of 
threads but with just more threads.

What do you see instead?

What we are seeing instead is a significant degradation of performance.
