  • install the QGIS version on a Windows machine
  • create a qgis_portable folder
  • create a QGIS folder within qgis_portable
  • copy in QGIS all the folders and files of the installation (somewhere in C:\Program Files)
  • copy the qgis.bat file outside QGIS but still inside qgis_portable
  • if works, by double clicking on qgis.bat QGIS starts and a qgis_config folder will be created

option: put inside QGIS the configuration.ini file for the GUI customization

Tried on windows xp after qgis-dev installation (via osgeo) but process failed. This the output: Windows cannot find 'C:\DOCUM1\matteo\Desktop\QGIS_P1\QGIS|bin\qgis-bin.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search"

Tried the same procedure with QGIS 2.0.1 and it works. Maybe it isn't possible (or al least so simple) for qgis master.
