qgis portable

Alternative to package creation is to use the qgis_portable (http://webgis.arpa.piemonte.it/geoportale/index.php/notizie-e-documentazione/manuali/167-quantum-gis-qgis).
Once downloaded and unzipped, just click on qgis.bat and QGIS will start.

We can set several option editing the file qgis.bat (see qgis --help for all the options available):

• to start qgis with our customization.ini file, first but it into the ../qgis_portable/QGIS folder -> add --customizationfile %OSGEO4W%\configuration.ini
• to start QGIS with a project AND the customization.ini file replace the line (start "Quantum GIS" /B %OSGEO4W_ROOT%\bin\qgis.bat --configpath %DRV_LTR%qgisconfig ) with IF "%1" == "" (start "Quantum GIS" /B %OSGEO4W_ROOT%\bin\qgis.bat --configpath %DRV_LTR%qgisconfig --customizationfile %OSGEO4W_ROOT%\configuration.ini) ELSE (start "Quantum GIS" /B %OSGEO4W_ROOT%\bin\qgis.bat --configpath %DRV_LTR%qgisconfig --project %1 --customizationfile %OSGEO4W_ROOT%\configuration.ini)

problem: not able to start customized qgis with Statist plugin

solved the Statist issue: added manually the statist folder (C:user/.../.qgis/python/plugins) into the qgis_portable/qgisconfig/python/plugins

qgis_portable project starts on every machine I tested: just in one double clicking on the project doesn't work, however qgis starts normally (so it is just a matter of loading the project)

qgis_portable updates:

• in almost every machine (win xp, 7 and 8) project starts with qgis.bat. Where not it is possible that default options (for example if qgis is already installed on the machine) cover some qgis.bat settings
• could be (really don't know why) that the project starts but is in Italian, but the qgis.bat starts in English. Project saved with English settings. For this reason it better to leave Options in the Settings menu
