  • While hours spent working are a big factor in having a positive work-life balance, being able to switch off mentally from the day has an important part to play.
  • Many people will not be able to dictate their hours, but can work on strategies to detach mentally after work.
  • Being able to disconnect and clear your head after working hours helps reduce stress, improve sleep and gives you a better mood and focus the next day.
  • Better mental health for everyone! Yayy!
  • Many 'real life' techniques and activities can help psychological detachment from work stresses. These include:

Distracting activities:

  • Physical activity / Leisure activities
  • Spending time in natural environments
  • Meditation
  • Listening to music that improves your mood

Leaving-work Rituals:

  • Writing a list of any outstanding 'to-dos' and 'remember this' at the end of the day that will be picked up the following morning.
  • Consistently performing a leaving 'ritual', a tick-list of things that mark the end of the work day. Over time, the routine tells your brain it's time to move out of 'work mode'.

Remove negative influences:

  • Disable non-essential notifications from all communication channels.
  • If you want to disable notifications full stop, give colleagues a way of contacting you in emergencies outside hours.
