It'd be nice if there was a way to just shove a duplex stream from somewhere into this and have it work from that rather than specifying URLs and making assumptions about the transport medium.

You may want to check out Clocksy. It is a tiny library, far less ambitious than timesync, but is transport-agnostic and disables itself when it detects it's running in a hidden tab (some browsers, e.g. Chrome, optimize timers in such a case, interfering with the algorithm).
