Is it possible to use the X-Dream software on different hardware?

That Trixter PC might have been a gaming powerhouse in its day, but my ultra-thin notebook PC with its 2GHz i3 CPU runs rings around it these days and takes up a whole lot less space. Do I have to put up with that bulky PC, and the big metal case, and tiny monitor and stand, all intended for heavy duty public gym usage, in my home?

Can I use it like this ?

Version 3.50.0.3 of the software runs in Windows 10 (see #5) and Ubuntu Linux (see #105, although this hasn't been tested much by the maintainer). The rest of this discussion refers to a Windows 10 installation.

• On some systems you need to set the application compatibility to Windows 7 or Windows 8 to avoid strange rainbow colour issues.
• On all systems I've tested other than the original Trixter PC, the "attract" and "tier completion" wmv files play with blank blue video in X-Dream, but play fine in media players. This has been observed to be solved by the DirectX wrappers provided in dgVoodoo 2.8.2 I've got X-Dream running on alternative hardware, but the videos are all blue, gray or some other consistent color. What to do? #16
• The PL2303 driver can be an inconvenience, because Prolific stopped support for the chip the bike uses, and Windows 10 keeps updating the driver to a modern one that refuses to work. This can be avoided by holding the driver back with some registry settings How to fix: "PL2303HXA PHASED OUT SINCE 2012. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SUPPLIER" #8.

I've had X-Dream running usably on 2 similar types of "stick PC":

• Intel Compute Stick (Atom Z8330 CPU)
• ACEPC T6 stick PC (Atom Z8350 CPU)

However, I don't consider it a good enough user experience:

• There are parts where it gets quite jerky making it difficult to navigate
• If I run it in a window using DxWnd alongside the Task Manager CPU graph, the TrixterAppRelease.exe process uses a maximum of about 27% CPU even though Process Explorer indicates processor affinity is configured to allow it to run on all CPUs.
• I guess the software is not written to take advantage of multiple CPUs/cores

Recommendation for a replacement PC: at least a 3rd generation Intel Core-i3 CPU.
