This should be possible with Wayback Machine and Archive.is, but it could involve a lot of background requests depending on how is it implemented.
We could check for an archived version only when the page did not return a status code of 200, and that wouldn't be resource intensive. Though the extension is also used for opening cached versions when the web page is otherwise still available, and to satisfy that use case we would need to check every page the user visits, which would waste a lot of resources.
We could also explore other solutions, such as checking for archived copies of the current tab only when the extension popup is opened, because then the intent of looking for archived versions is clear.
It would be useful if there could be an icon indicating existing archived copies and/or the number of existing copies.
