System Requirements
===================
This tool has been designed on a Debian Woody Linux.
Until version 1.0.0, other systems (including Win32)
had not been supported. If you have problems compiling
the tool, at first try to check the Makefile manually.
It's not a big thing. If you already took a loot at it
and found you can help and improve portability, then
please change it and send it back to me. Also libxml,
GTK+ and some standard C/C++ libraries/headers are required.
Compilation Preparation
=======================
At first, unpack the gnu-zipped source tarball.
user@host:somedir# tar -zxlvf knowde_1.7.1.tgz
This should result in a subdirectory called knowde.
Change to this directory to do the next steps.
user@host:somedir# cd knowde
In this directory, you should have some files like
Makefile(s), README, this INSTALL(!!), BUGS and
again some subdirectories like src/, lib/, bin/
and so on. Since you are reading this INSTALL file,
I guess you have proceeded successfully so far.
Compilation Under Linux or Win32 w/ MinGW w/ MSys
========================================
Make sure you have libxml2 (2.6.0 or higher) and
GTK+ (2.0 or higher) properly installed. You can
check the GTK+ installation by
user@host:knowde# pkg-config gtk+-2.0 --modversion
There should be something like "2.2.4" or so, but
it could be anything else. If it returnes an
error message like "command not found", then there
is at even no pkg-config installed. www.gtk.org
tells you more how to install the whole package.
Otherwise, guessing everything is fine, we go on
with editing the Makefile (if you want) and compile
the knowde source files to binaries.
user@host:knowde# vi Makefile (for CPU types and optimizations)
The line which is most interesting is:
CC=g++ -Wall -O4 -mcpu=i686 -march=i686
This means that the code will be optimized and compiled
only for Pentium-II or later Intel/Athlon processors.
This should be a common thing. If you have a different
architecture, then you could delete the last two options
what results in a general executable code, or switch to
other optimization options that fit your architecture.
user@host:knowde# make
Then type 'make' in the knowde directory.
It should then result in a binary (bin/knowde).
If you have the appropriate rights, you may copy
the binary to a global executables directory like
/usr/local/bin:
user@host:knowde# cp bin/knowde /usr/local/bin
Now you're done. Execute Knowde to make sure everything
went fine, but I'm sure it did:
user@host:knowde# /usr/local/bin/knowde
The directory your into right now is not needed afterwards,
if you copied the binary somewhere else. You can savely
delete it to save disk space:
user@host:knowde# cd ..
user@host:somedir# rm -rf knowde/
Have fun.
Compilation on Win32 w/ MinGW w/o MSys
========================================
This is more complicated and is not recommended, because
you cannot use pkg-config in the Makefile itself. If you
have succedeed in installing gnu command line tools in the
Win32 environment, then you're no beginner, so I will keep
this section rather short.
You have two options:
1st) edit the Makefile, an bring in your pkg-config results
2nd) edit the Makefile.MinGW, and set the root directories there
If you're done in the Makefile.MinGW, then you could simply go on
with the standard procedure:
knowde# make
knowde# copy bin\knowde.exe C:\WINDOWS
knowde# knowde
Now should have the whole thing compiled and running. Have fun!
