this is a long standing issue, people are surprised that when they join a group all contacts are added to their contact list, "where this all this contacts came from??? I don't know them!"

The database stores the contact origin, so it is possible to change the sort order in the core and e.g. first display the contacts that we definitely know, and then continue the list with contacts that we have seen in the From or To field but never added them manually or sent them a message.

there was the idea to use use different origins for "show contact list, no search" and "search in contact list", #2411 (comment), it was not merged that time, but maybe we should just give it a try (seems easy); iOS needs adaption first, it seems (not totally sure if the comment there is still true)
