[BUG] Rofi 1.6.1 Build on Ubuntu 20 Fails

On debian, the current available version is 1.5.4. I attempted to build it from source, but failed at ../configure. Even though I have installed all available xcb dependencies, I still get:

configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.36 xcb xcb-aux xcb-xkb xkbcommon xkbcommon-x11 xcb-ewmh xcb-icccm xcb-xrm xcb-randr xcb-xinerama) were not met:

No package 'xcb-ewmh' found
No package 'xcb-icccm' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables GW_XCB_INTERNAL_CFLAGS
and GW_XCB_INTERNAL_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

Is this simply a limitation of using debian? Or is there a library I am missing?

Steps to reproduce

• uninstall rofi on a debian system
• download the .tar.gz from the 1.6.1 release and extract it
• mkdir build && cd build
• ../configure

What behaviour you see

• Configure fails to find my xcb installation

• Configure finds the xcb installation

It looks like you are missing the right packages.

libxcb-ewmh-dev
libxcb-icccm4-dev

Please follow the instructions in INSTALL.md carefully.

If you have the right repo enabled, this command might get you boosted getting the right dependencies:

sudo apt build-dep rofi

This should install all build-dependencies for rofi 1.5.4. (or whatever version is shipped with ubuntu).

Thank you for the help. I sincerely apologize, as I was sure I had checked and double checked for those packages. After installing them, and many others, rofi built perfectly. After re-reading the install guide, I can see that you pointed to exactly the right packages, I just somehow could not find them. (Maybe it could have been clearer, but the information was all there.)

As far as sudo apt build-dep rofi, that does work, but only for 1.5.4. I needed 1.6 to use larger icons, leading me to build from source.

No problem, glad you got it installed.

apt build-dep rofi installs rofi 1.5.4 dependencies, as i said, its a good boost getting starting as it installs 90%+ of the dependencies for 1.6.

Yes, but I had already installed rofi 1.5.4 (through apt), so I already had them.

no you didn't. otherwise you would not have gotten the error in this issue.

On debian based systems, packages are split in 'runtime' and 'developement' packages, the last are postfixed by -dev.
(for example the library libssl allows an application to use libssl, but to build an application that uses libssl, you need: libssl-dev)

So if you install rofi via apt, you get the runtime dependencies, build-dep installs the dependencies to build rofi (hence the name build-dep).

Oh, okay. I assumed that it needed to build by default, so I thought that I had everything for rofi 1.5.4.
