"One idea would be to create leagues, the majors and bush league (or bronze, silver, gold etc.). You'd basically opt into the bush league by taking a loan as you described. This gets you some number of bush league dollars that you use to bet with.
"So each league would have a separate currency, and you only compete with people in your own league. There's a conversion rate of bush currency to major currency, so if you do well in the bush league you can buy your way back into the low end of the majors. The conversion rate should be pretty stingy so there isn't an incentive to intentionally drop leagues.
"If there are prizes at the end of the season, then the major prizes should obviously be much better than the bush league prizes."
