Performance issue with hide draft option enabled

As per title.
I have many articles and If I enable this option it reduces speed noticeably when opening those pages, getting spinner when trying to expand menu (indexmenu) and it occasionally/randomly throws pcre backtrack error. I increased pcre.backtrack_limit to 200K and I know I can increase it to 1M but speed is still affected.
I was just wondering if the code maybe could be re-checked and optimized?
