Looks good to me, we should /cc closure-library list, as well as ping all closure-* lists with the issue tracker here... I'll do it a bit later unless you can now

Google Closure Tools Twitter account uses this logo, i think that's pretty much it.

You are welcome to use the logo to indicate that the site is an informational site about Closure, though please avoid giving the impression that it is the home page of Closure or is the official site of the legal entity "The Closure Library/Compiler/etc Authors" used in the OSS licenses in the code.

Beyond that, thanks for putting this together, and we may link to it from the existing Closure tools pages. It would be great to have the outside world maintaining these, as presently, we do not have staffing working on external Closure resources.

Thanks again,

Nathan

I will ping legal to put the logo under CC as is done with the Android logo. This should make the legal aspects clearer. As of today, it is a creative work created by Google employees, thus copyright Google (which it will continue to be under CC).

re-opening the issue, waiting for the ping back... Dimitris also posted about this on the closure list...

Bit confused atm, but there's no rush anyway, it'll be quite a while before the project is ready for the general public

Sorry, it looks like you have a number of threads and contacts at Google going. We've found each other and are coordinating a response/policy.

To be honest, I kinda like better than the official logo.

ye, it looks more interesting.

The issue however is being able to market closure properly. A job google has proven to not be interested in. When marketing you have to have your story straight. You have to be consistent when communicating and part of that consistency is your visual identity.

Since closureplease is an effort that takes upon the task of marketing closure, the only thing that makes sense regarding visual communication is to have actual logos and collateral as it will be the main gateway for the community to closure.

I am pretty firm about that stuff, it's not a matter of opinion it's marketing 101.

The point here is trademarks. I'm not a lawyer, and Google Legal is the ultimate source on this.

But...

Closure is a trademark of Google: http://www.google.com/permissions/trademark/our-trademarks.html

Per the license: http://closure-library.googlecode.com/git/LICENSE

(6) Trademarks. This License does not grant permission to use the trade names, trademarks, service marks, or product names of the Licensor, except as required for reasonable and customary use in describing the origin of the Work and reproducing the content of the NOTICE file.

Analogous is Android, which is open source but is a Google trademark. It is OK to have a site about Android (see androidcentral.com), but it is not OK to market a competing phone platform named Android.

I've not forgotten about the logo policy -- we'll be drafting and publishing this soon. I think using the logo in the informational sense is fine, and I will verify and publish this so that there no ambiguity. Thanks for your patience.

I think we need to steer away from the actual Closure Logo.

I'll opt for a custom designed one, which can also pose as a badge that all projects that use Closure can use on their README...

I am seriously considering hiring someone to handle the logo and look & feel of the closureplease.com site.

@kuzmisin what do you think?

Hey there --

sorry to not have pinged this thread, but we got a statement from our internal trademark folk and added some language on the topic to the FAQ. Hopefully this clarifies things.

https://developers.google.com/closure/faq

May I use the Closure logo or name in my project?

The Closure Tools trademark and associated logo are owned by Google Inc. Though the Closure Tools source code is offered under the Apache License, Version 2.0, this license does not grant unrestricted permission to use the name or logo (see the license).

The Closure Tools trademark and logo may be used to identify the Closure Tools suite or any of the properties in the suite in a reasonable, customary, fair-use manner. Examples of use include documentation or articles written about Closure or instructions for how to use the tools in practice.

The Closure Tools trademark and logo may not be used in connection with an independent product or project name, or in any way that would imply that an offering is part of or otherwise related to the Closure suite.

I agree, but I have no connection to good graphic guy right now, so I can't help. But if you will agree, I'll use it on http://www.closurecheatsheet.com/ too.

Btw. logo mentioned in jay9909 comment has a great animation/effect potential (4 circles)

I actually like the closure cheat sheet logo.

We could use the logo with the four circles, perhaps take out the 3d effect for now

From all current options i like the four-circled one too.

But unless a designer comes up, i'll go forward with hiring one and he / she can make the decision along with the ui stuff we need for the closureplease site.

I am already looking for a designer for another project of mine, trying to see if freelance markets work =) If they do i'll use him / her for closureplease too.

This should happen in ~3weeks from now... i'll keep you posted when i have more.
