It is also not clear that the area selection is the same as uploading a screenshot of the area you just chose in the map.

It's actually not the same. Area selection is necessary for external services to know on what area calculations have to be performed. The "Include in report" (aka create a screenshot) then allows the user to have images of the Study area in the final PDF report, which is by default not the case.

I suppose we should add some text description on that page to clarify what each of the buttons does.

No, this is something else. This error was also reported by Meteogrid and ZAMG. However, in a Study created by Drazen just a couple of minutes before that, this error did not occur. And the Study created by Jan (a couple of days later) also did not run into this error. I will open up a separate issue for this error.

I tried the incognito window and I can still cause this error to happen:
I first choose an area, then I include it in the report. Afterwards I choose a different area and include it in the report again, and then this error ocurs. (For the use case where I select an area, but I change my mind because I selected the wrong one, or I want to adjust it a bit)

I was finally able to reproduce and fix this error. It had nothing to do with the Map component. Error was caused by another button in the right sidebar, which was using ajax. If the Study wasn't ready for calculations that button was changed via a JavaScript in the csis_helpers module. And that (for whatever reason) caused that error after the second time a screenshot was taken (no interaction with the map component inbetween necessary).

I have tried to produce a screening study for the whole Linz today (03.07.2020). (https://csis.myclimateservice.eu/study/37). It mostly works as expected, except for the following:

  1. I have seen in slides by @claudiahahn that hazard maps are now showing the value on mouse click or hoover. Can't reproduce this, maybe that's only available on dev server?
  2. "with adaptation options" results are wrong, but this is a known issue.
  3. No Temperature indices are available for "RCP4.5, mid-century" scenario. "worst case" scenario works fine: https://csis.myclimateservice.eu/study/37/step/1644/view/maps.

I'll re-calculate it now, maybe 3 disappears.

PS: the study itself is older, maybe the templates used are outdated? But this would not explain the point 3.

This is a report/feedback on the project from a first time user. Basically, some suggestions for improvements, etc.
Feedback on Clarity CSIS.docx

Introduction
This report serves as feedback for and recommendation for various changes to the Clarity CSIS and the Acceptance Test Specification based on first-time user experience. Improvements suggested are intended to make the user experience easier and more comprehensible and to generate an enhanced understanding about the projects scope and capabilities.
Feedback
From the performance perspective, the system works quite well. All the actions listed in the acceptance test specification were performed without apparent glitches. One issue that did occur was the tables sometimes displaying the message “no rows found”. For a first-time user the system can be overwhelming to a certain degree - it is sometimes not possible to determine all the system’s capabilities at one glance. Without the acceptance test specification, the creation of a new study is doable, but will certainly take longer. There are certain issues that are likely to confuse uninitiated users and that create the impression of the process being more complicated than it actually is. If these are improved or changed, the system would become more self-explanatory than it currently is.

  1. Recommended changes within the system
1.1 Removal of the Sector Option
When a study is first created, one issue that is likely to confuse users is the sector option in the context tab. This option allows the selection of various sectors (agriculture etc.) that incites the expectation that selecting a sector is important for the outcome of the study and that the information users want to receive about a certain area is limited to the sectors selected. However, the result of the study is seemingly not influenced by the selection of these sectors. As this option does not constitute a large contribution to the study, the recommendation would be to remove this option entirely or at least hide it until its usage makes a perceivable difference to the study’s result.

1.2 Renaming the Summary Tab
The second suggestion for improvement within the system is more of a semantic nature. The last tab when creating a new study is the summary tab. The recommendation here would be to rename this tab from summary to study report or simply report, since what this section offers is not strictly speaking a summary of all information found within the previous tabs, but rather a preview of the study report that can be downloaded in its entirety as a pdf. Renaming this section will enable the user to know exactly what to expect from this section and where to find the finalized report.

1.3 Explain reason and purpose for Twin studies
The section Hazard Characterization displays the “Twin” tab. While this is a very interesting feature, which would likely make the results of the user’s own study more comprehensible, its presentation is severely lacking. Neither the tab itself nor the Acceptance test specification mentions what the Twin tab is intended for and why exactly this feature is of good use to users wanting to provide a comparison, support or explanation to their study report. The recommendation would thus be to add a detailed explanation of the purpose of the twin tab and how to use it at the top of the tab or in the introduction. This will likely lead to an increased understanding and therefore increased usage of this feature, with users being able to exploit it to its fullest potential.

1.4 Signpost “Change descriptions”
This rather minor change might be vital for less attentive users and entails explicitly stating that the text within the introduction tabs in all sections can be freely changed or entirely replaced by the user. While the “change description” button at the bottom of the page is an indicator, mentioning this possibility somewhere at the top of the tab or in the test specification would ensure that the user is aware of this option. It would also demonstrate the necessity of changing the description for producing a customized study rather than one that reads the generic descriptions of the system.

  1. Further suggestions
    2.1 Adding Prices
This suggestion concerns the selection of the adaption options for the user’s study, i.e. the study area. While the users are likely aware of the options that would fit their needs and their area of interest best, they might not be aware of the costs their choices entail (in their country, region or in general). Therefore, the suggestion would be to include prices for these options (on average or specified for the country of the study area if that is possible). Adding this feature might increase the system’s appeal to the user. It could also prepare for further steps after the theoretical stage, depicting what actual implementation of these options might necessitate.

2.2 Map Comparisons
The maps in all sections could be further exploited in their potential as visual representations. As the user is able to select various scenarios (historical etc.) and several adaption options, the maps could serve as a direct comparison between two scenarios. Visualizing hazard impacts in different time periods or the reduction of hazard damage through the adoption of adaption mechanisms compared to no measures taken makes more of an impression. The visual comparisons would also emphasize the importance of preparation to future hazard events and serves as a strong statement in studies.

2.3 Removal of Scenarios/Event Frequency
The Hazard tabs include the scenarios the user has selected for their study, however, the inclusion of the scenarios and especially the event frequency do not change anything in the results displayed. Therefore, the scenario box as a whole or only the event frequency could be removed to spare the user redundant (and unnecessary) information.

Conclusion
The Clarity CSIS is a system with great potential that could provide users with a lot of relevant information. However, the user experience could be improved and likely will improve if at least some of the recommendations listed above are taken into consideration.

@p-a-s-c-a-l : I think that something is wrong either with our calculations or with scenario analysis widget.

Example 1: for Linz study https://csis.myclimateservice.eu/study/37/step/1643/view/scenario-analysis, RCP26 and RCP45 data for mid-century is missing. I don't understand why this is the case. maybe @humerh or @patrickkaleta knows?

Moreover, "rare" RCP45 events are less dangerous for end-century than for start of the century.
image

I have asked @RobAndGo to look at this. At first this looked completely implausible to me, but maybe it isn't. The point is that yearly events reflect average temperature, which is still growing in RCP4.5 scenario, (from https://robertscribbler.com/2016/08/02/choosing-our-nations-course-for-the-next-40000-years-democratic-and-republican-party-platforms-show-extreme-contrast-on-climate-change/rcp-8-5-nature/)

image

On the other hand, 20y events are anomalies and there are more anomalies when climate changes fast. At least, that's what I've learned to expect from any complex system in "theory of chaos" back in the 90es. And in RCP4.5 scenario, the climate apparently starts stabilizing at a higher level again mid-century. So maybe this is OK?

Unfortunately, this isn't the only anomaly. Here is the data for Stockholm (https://csis.myclimateservice.eu/study/179/step/4828/view/scenario-analysis):

image

In RCP2.6, temperature should start falling mid-century. Here it doesn't.

Yes, Scenario analysis application is not showing all data since there are cases where for a given grid point, specific heat wave events may not occur.

Thanks again for the helpful suggestions @fabrisj! I've created separate issues to addresses the recommendations.

The Hazard tabs include the scenarios the user has selected for their study, however, the inclusion of the scenarios and especially the event frequency do not change anything in the results displayed. Therefore, the scenario box as a whole or only the event frequency could be removed to spare the user redundant (and unnecessary) information.

Yes, they do. E.g. the list of map layers depends on the combination of RCP, time period and event frequency ("Template Resources"). However, this is not obvious to users as there is no comparison between different scenarios as you've mentioned. But we plan to add this for at least for adaption vs. baseline scenarios.

This is a reoccurring issue that I keep seeing:

@DenoBeno This is my reoccurring answer: I can only show what I get from EMIKAT. And data actually does not exist, despite what is shown on the map:

Could not load indicator file RCP26 (2041-2070). It contains no indicator data for indicatorRare
Could not load indicator file RCP45 (2011-2040). It contains no indicator data for indicatorFrequent

I think the reason has been explained by @RobAndGo and @humerh : Scenario analysis application is not showing all data since there are cases where for a given grid point, specific heat wave events may not occur.

This is the data received from EMIKAT API and visualised in Scenario Analysis Tool:

{
