WTForms crashes when using HTML5 date picker #7

Trying to use Python2.7 and the wtforms 2.2.1 HTML5 date picker within a wizard page.

from wtforms.fields.html5 import DateField

The form displays fine when I first show it in the wizard but if I Next to another page and go back, things crash.

AttributeError: 'unicode' object has no attribute 'strftime'

File "G:\myapp\env\lib\site-packages\wtforms\fields\core.py", line 736, in _value
return self.data and self.data.strftime(self.format) or ''

Any idea where to start debugging?
