Civic Data Mentorship

Hello! This channel is for folks who are interested in participating in the research study called Civic Data Mentorship. This is in partnership with a course at UIC. Youth will investigate and address a social justice issue in their life. This will go mid-October to mid-December, be online or in-person, and mentors will be compensated $100.

The weeks will proceed as follows:

• Week 1: intros
• Week 2: identify social justice issue from life in Chicago
• Week 3: identify a dataset
• Week 4: analyze the political, cultural, historical complexities of the dataset. Light stats analysis.
• Week 5: create an artifact (app design, news article, documentary, poetry, or art)

The following topics of interest (may shift slightly):

• food deserts/apartheid
• reproductive justice
• mental health
• immigration
• policing
• Israel/Gaza
• LGBTQ+ rights

I am looking for folks with experience with any of the following: advocacy, journalism, art, design, policy, data. I am also looking for folks who are good at creating an inspiring and safe space for youth.
