Update contributing guides and flip the primary branch to master

We need to be consistent with other open source projects. Let's update the Contributing and Release guides and establish a Contributors list. We can also set up some templates for creating issues and pull requests. Also we should move the code to master instead of stable, because it doesn't make sense to have our unreleased code in "stable".
