Given sops wonderful usage for sharing secrets across teams, would it be possible to use this plugin to encrypt terraforms state "locally" in a way that could be shared more trivially via git, etc?
If this requires work in terraform, let me know, I'll file a feature request there too.

wow, a 5 year old feature request: hashicorp/terraform#5877. Makes me want to speculate about why. I wonder if it's that hard to implement? Seems like it shouldn't be a hard interface to write/conform to?

Agree that it would be a nice thing! However, as you found, there's no interface for it at the moment :(
The Hashicorp team doesn't appear to have been active in the issue you linked since before the new plugin architecture was implemented however, so perhaps it could be something they are open to now?
