I don't understand your question?

What is the difference between "personal" and "topic" channel?

The user is able to create a "personal" or a "topic" node.

Is the "/user/" part of the node name redundant information?

for the moment all channels live under the /user/ hierarchy.

A good description of user vs topic is here: http://buddycloud.com/api#nodes

I've added a note buddycloud/buddycloud-xep#56 to remind myself to XEP this better.

The "/user/" part is there because it's there. It will be part of all nodes or not in future.

The "channel_type" in the xep-0004 form is a flag that does not affect anything.

correct?

Client implementation:

A user has ONE automatic generated personal node.
A user can create MANY topic nodes at "topics.buddycloud.org"
