Production Build

  • I'm using the legacy Bitwarden app pubicly available in App Store / Play Store and I'm aware that Bitwarden Beta bugs should be reported in bitwarden/android or bitwarden/ios

Steps To Reproduce

These instructions are for Google Chrome on a Windows 11 PC.

  1. Open BitWarden web page on a PC web browser
  2. Log in
  3. Click on 'Settings'
  4. Click on 'Security'
  5. Scroll down to 'Log in with passkey'
  6. If there is a button 'Turn on', press it.
  7. If there is a button 'New passkey', press it.
  8. Follow any prompts to verify yourself (e.g. by entering a master password, or a verification code).
  9. Your web browser will display a prompt to add a passkey, but it'll vary depending on whether it goes to Google Password Authenticator or Windows Hello.
  10. If the Google Password Manager pop up window appears (contains a picture with a key and fingerprint), and there is a button 'Save another way', click on that button and go to the next step. Otherwise, skip to the next step.
  11. If the (or another) Google Password Manager pop up window appears and there is an option 'Windows Hello or external security key', click on that option and go to the next step. Otherwise skip to the next step.
  12. A Windows Security pop up window appears, click on 'Use another device'.
  13. Another Windows Security pop up window appears. Select 'iPhone, iPad or Android device'
  14. Click on Next.
  15. A QR code appears.
  16. Scan the QR code with an iPhone.
  17. Click on the yellow web link that appears.

Expected Result

  1. A window should pop up on the iPhone asking you to choose which password manager you want to install the passkey in.
  2. Select one (e.g. 'Passwords' i.e. Apple's Passwords app).
  3. Click on 'Continue'.
  4. Follow any steps to verify yourself (e.g. with a fingerprint or face ID).
  5. The passkey should be created.
  6. On the Windows PC, you are asked to name the passkey, etc.

Actual Result

  1. A window pops up with the heading 'Sign In', the Bitwarden icon and a message saying 'The operation could not be completed. Please try again.'
  2. Close the window.
  3. On the PC, a popup window appears saying 'Something went wrong'.

Additional Context

Assumes Google Chrome on a PC running Windows 11 24H2 and an iPhone 13 running iOS 18.2.
All are up to date.

The only way I could create a passkey on the iPhone was on the iPhone using the Bitwarden web page on the Safari browser.

Just some further information in case it helps.

Bitwarden's community forum's accounts also allow you to create passkeys, and they don't have this bug, i.e. you can start to create a passkey for an iPhone from a Windows PC and eventually, the iPhone does have a new passkey for the forum account.
