Honestly, a pull from GM4's Tunnel Bores made to work with your train cart system. This would be awesome for vanilla/survival players to create tunnels automatically through mountains or make their own underground subway. You could have it where the bore area is adjustable, a train cart could pick up items, etc..

Sadly the survival aspect of traincarts is already very debatable. There's quite a lot of features which can be exploited in survival, so idk how much value more survival components for traincarts brings.
I have things planned for the future that will hopefully make the survival aspect less command-oriented though, and I might consider this sort of feature then.
Traincarts does already have this very niche hardly known feature called pickup (to have chest minecarts pick up items) and block breaking (breaks blocks and drops items to the side of the rails) which were meant for a farming mechanic. Just nobody uses it :)
On our server we use the the train carts as actual trains, we have different mines for players to ship their items back to a shipment yard that gets processed and then we have a train that ships out food and tools for the players at their mines. Its kind of automated sort of, I usually run the shipment yard.
Now I knew about the pickup setting it is on, however I'm just now learning about the blockBreakTypes. I'll throw the idea out to the miners of the server and see if they want to try and use this. Sadly however it only breaks to the left and right of the rails. Oh well, I'll let their imaginations come up with some ideas.
