The idea came up on Slack (see #reg channel on 2024-03-30) of submitting projects to GSoC. Apparently being a host org is quite labour intensive, but we could work with partner organisations that would be the official hosts, even if the students would work on Turing projects. Malvika has experience of this.

The Turing Way have hosted GSoC projects before.

I think @malvikasharan may have managed it.

2024 timeline here

  • January 22nd applications opened
  • February 6th applications closed

We probably want to start getting this organised around November 2024

Some points from today's catch-up:

  • Turing Way partnered with an organisation called INCF to host.
  • Projects need to be pretty big and the GSoC part of them needs to be well scoped. Maybe something like DSH or Bluebird could fit?
  • The Turing.jl project that Markus is on will have two GSoC students this summer, can learn from that how it works.
  • EDI SA might be interested in this too.

I've set a reminder to come back to this in November as Rosie suggested.
