I'm interested in how we can use this group (likely in collaboration with TPS) to promote open source culture at the Turing.

That could include, for example,

  • Writing policies to enforce (or strongly encourage) the use of OSI approved licenses for all software
  • Formal guidance for licensing, code of conduct, etc.
  • Encouraging projects to start open rather than expecting to work in private and release later
  • Funding important upstream projects (e.g. sklearn, numpy, pandas)

The key here is trying as much as possible to make these items formal and adopted at an institutional level.
That might mean lobbying and finding support from people able to make these changes.
We might also consider creating an "Open Source Officer" role or similar for the person ultimately responsible.
