Pulling the work to support split documents out from the work for supporting AI collaboration documents (issue #113). The work to support AI collaboration documents is being done for milestone 0.4.5, but this does not support documents split without the chapter marker. From the comments:

The algorithm [used for #113] will work for Collaboration mode documents as well as documents split with the standard chapter marker. I'm not sure how the split "from current point" can be put back together in order; it looks like AI desktop requires the user to specify the document order for rejoining these documents.

That's correct. The dialog for document joining will join them in top to bottom listed order. In AID the user has control over the order in the sense that if he doesn't want the default order shown, he can tweak.
